Color rendering is the whole game
Color rendering (CRI) is how faithfully light shows color. Under low-CRI light, a deep red looks brown and metallic paint looks flat. For cars, aim for CRI 90 or higher, and match the white across the room so the same car doesn't change color as you walk around it.
Reflections, not hot spots
A car is a mirror. Small, bright point sources show up as glaring dots on the paint. Long linear sources (a cove, a continuous line, a lit coffer) show up as clean highlight lines that trace the body, the way studio photographers light cars. That's why we lean on continuous lines overhead and save spots for accents.
Give the hero car its own light
The featured car should be a step brighter than the rest of the floor, lit from two or more angles so there are no harsh shadows on the side facing the door. It's the first thing a walk-in sees and the last thing a driver sees through the glass.
Layer the room
- Display: high-CRI light on the cars.
- Ambient: enough general light to walk and talk, without washing out the display.
- Accent: the logo wall, the delivery area, architectural features.
- Hospitality: warmer light, around 3000–3500 K, in the lounge and at the desks, so the room where people sign feels calmer than the floor.
The glass sells at night
After hours, a lit showroom is a lightbox facing the road. Leave the display and the logo wall on a night scene, turn the ceiling down, and keep fixtures out of the sightline through the glass so drivers see cars, not glare.
A logo wall worth photographing
A backlit or halo-lit logo wall, or a neon line in your brand color, gives the room a focal point and gives buyers a backdrop. See custom signs and logo walls and the delivery stage.
Franchise stores
Brand image programs often specify showroom finishes and some fixtures. We work inside those standards and focus on what's usually open: display light, the lounge, the delivery area and features. See image programs.
When lighting won't fix it
A dated floor plan, crowded cars or a showroom used as storage won't look better under better light. Clear the floor first.
