Accent and highlight lighting

Accent lighting puts light on the few things you want noticed (the front door, the columns, a stone wall, a specimen tree, a sign) and leaves the rest in shadow. It's what makes a lit house look designed instead of decorated. We add accents to any roofline, or install them on their own.

Also called: highlight lighting, highlights, feature lighting, spotlighting, column lighting, entry lighting.

What we highlight

  • Entries: a glow around the front door so the arrival reads first
  • Columns and posts: a soft wash or a slim line up each one
  • Stone, brick and texture: light grazing a wall so the material shows
  • Trees: one specimen tree lit well beats ten lit badly
  • Signs and features: a monument, a logo, a hero car in a showroom

Restraint is the design

Highlights only work when there's darkness around them. We pick two or three things that matter and light those properly. Contrast is what makes a lit house look expensive.

Codes and neighbors

Some cities restrict upward light. In Nichols Hills, outdoor light has to be shielded and aimed down, so accents there are downlights and moonlighting rather than uplights. We check your city's rules before we design.

Questions

Accent and highlight lighting: questions

What is accent lighting on a house?

Light aimed at specific features, such as the entry, columns, a stone wall or a tree, rather than lighting everything evenly.

Can accents change color?

Yes. Color-capable fixtures can run warm white most nights and color for holidays, alongside your roofline.

How is accent lighting priced?

By the light, not the location. Spotlights, uplights and wall lights are priced per piece. A continuous accent line is $70 a foot wherever it goes (columns, an entry, a fascia run or a pergola), with no minimum. You get a price with your night mockup.
