Interior lighting: coves, stairs, bars and kitchens

Interior LED lighting hides a line of light in the architecture: around a tray ceiling, under each stair tread, beneath the kitchen cabinets or behind a bathroom mirror. You see the glow, not the fixture. It comes in warm white, tunable white that warms as it dims, or full color, and it's priced per room.

Also called: cove lighting, tray ceiling lighting, toe-kick lighting, stair lighting, under-cabinet lighting, backlit mirror.

Where it goes

  • Tray and cove ceilings: an even glow that makes the ceiling float
  • Stairs: a line under each tread, safe at night and beautiful
  • Kitchens: under-cabinet task light and a soft toe-kick glow
  • Bathrooms: backlit mirrors
  • Bars, shelves and media rooms: backlit panels and accents

Best during a build or remodel

A recessed channel cut into drywall or cabinetry is the cleanest install, and it's easiest when the walls are open. In a finished house we use slim surface channels that disappear into the trim. See building a new home.

Questions

Interior lighting: questions

How is interior lighting priced?

Per room, based on what we light in it. You get a price after a quick walk-through.

Can interior lighting match the exterior scenes?

Color interior lighting can run scenes too. Most people keep interiors in warm or tunable white.

Do you need to open the walls?

Not usually. Surface channels work in finished rooms. Recessed channels are best when walls or cabinets are already open.
