Patio, pergola and outdoor-living lighting

Patio and pergola lighting makes the outdoor room usable after dark. A continuous line of warm light runs under the pergola beams, soft light falls over the outdoor kitchen and seat walls, and color is ready for a party. It stays up all year, doesn't sag like string lights, and runs on a schedule.

Also called: pergola lighting, patio lighting, outdoor kitchen lighting, deck lighting, pool area lighting, string light replacement.

Where it goes

  • Pergolas: a continuous line under each beam, warm and dimmable
  • Outdoor kitchens and bars: task light where you cook, glow under the counter edge
  • Seat walls and steps: low light where people sit and walk
  • Patio edges: a soft boundary so the space reads as a room

Better than string lights

String lights sag, fade and come down every few years. A permanent line under the beams looks cleaner, stays up, and can do warm white, dim or color.

Near the pool

Lighting within a few feet of a pool follows stricter electrical rules. We light the pergola, kitchen and walls set back from the water. Anything at the pool's edge or in the water is designed with a licensed electrician or your pool builder.

Questions

Patio and pergola lighting: questions

Can pergola lights be dimmed?

Yes. Warm white dims for dinner and brightens for a party, and color is available too.

Can you replace our string lights?

Yes. A continuous line under the beams replaces them and stays up permanently.

Can you light around our pool?

We light the surrounding pergola, kitchen and walls. Lighting close to the water is designed with a licensed electrician, because the electrical rules near pools are stricter.

How is patio and pergola lighting priced?

By the light, not the location. An accent line is $70 a foot whether it runs under pergola beams, along a seat wall or up a column, and spot and step lights are priced per piece. For a whole backyard, I'll give you an estimate on the first visit and a firm quote once I've measured.
